Update: 2014-12-24 22:25 GMT
An Algerian television network reported today that the army has killed the head of the Jund al-Khilafa jihadist group behind the beheading of a Frenchman in September.

Abdelmalek Gouri, whose group has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) organisation that has overrun large parts of Iraq and Syria, was killed in Sidi Daoud, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from Algiers, Nahar TV said. The army killed two other members of Jund al-Khilafa in the same operation, the channel said.
