Blaming the Opposition for the present sugarcane crisis in the state, Yadav said that during the previous BSP regime 21 sugar mills were sold at a throw away price while during the BJP tenure police opened fire on the cane farmers.
‘As there is no other issue before the opposition hence they are raising the cane farmers issue. The government is committed to pay Rs 280 per quintal for the sugarcane mills will purchase, ‘ Yadav said in the assembly on Monday after two adjournments.
The chief minister claimed that his government has done enough for the farmers including giving them free irrigation, and given them insurance.
‘We are forced to stick to the old rate of cane as the sugar industry is in red,’ he said while adding that the parties raising the issue were anti-farmers and were trying to provoke the cane farmers.
However, the opposition alleged that the state government in nexus with the private sugar mill owners have worked against the interest of cane farmers by not hiking the rate besides giving the mills a sops of around Rs 800 crore.
While BJP demanded Rs 350 per quintal cane price, the RLD has sought Rs 200 per quintal as bonus for the farmers on their cane produce.
Earlier, noisy scenes were witnessed in the state Assembly with the defiant opposition accusing the state government of colluding with the sugar mill owners to deny the rights of cane farmers. The opposition led by members of BJP, carrying placards against the state government, trouped into the well of the House prompting speaker Mata Prasad Pandey to adjourn the house twice suspending the question hour.
The BJP members were in upbeat mood after on Sunday’s assembly polls result and they sat in the well even before the proceedings were to start at 1100 hrs and refused to allow the chief minister to speak about the cane farmers. Despite repeated appeals from the parliamentary affairs minister Mohammad Azam Khan and the speaker, they refused to let Yadav make the statement.
