Ajay Maken, Dikshit spar in mayoral poll

Update: 2014-04-30 00:07 GMT
Elections to the post of mayor, South Delhi Municipal Corporation, were held on Tuesday.

Congress candidate Dharamveer Singh lost by a single vote to Bharatiya Janata Party’s Khushiram, as Dikshit reached late and Hashmi remained absent. The two are members of the corporation, in an ex-officio capacity.

It is interesting to note that the Congress candidate for the post of deputy mayor, Praveen Rana, defeated BJP’s candidate Veer Singh Bidhudi by 13 votes in the same election. Party insiders have said that Dharamveer Singh was a candidate propped up by sitting New Delhi MP Ajay Maken. One time protege of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Maken has now become her biggest detractor. ‘East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, son of Sheila Dikshit, proved that owing to internal party sabotage, the Congress party faced defeat in these mayoral elections’, said a senior leader from the party’s state unit.

After humiliation in the last Delhi Assembly polls, former chief minister Dikshit had admitted, ‘It is true that the party workers did not deliver as required. Even the MPs were not as active as they could have been. Troubles within the party came to the fore’.

According to DPCC sources, the complaint against Sandeep Dikshit will be filed with the party high command.
