Air India domestic market share rose to 20.8% in Oct

Air India's domestic passenger market share increased to 20.8 per cent in October.  The airline's domestic passenger data for the last six months shows consistent increase in its market share.

This has risen from 16.2 per cent in May to 20.8 per cent in October 2012. For the months of June, July, August and September, the market share of Air India was 16.8, 18.2, 18.2 and 19.3 per cent respectively. Compared to October 2011 too, the market share of Air India has shown considerable improvement, rising from 16.6 per cent to 20.8 per cent.

Further, during October 2012 the airline carried 9.49 lakh passengers compared to 8.98 lakh passengers in October 2011. The passenger load factor (PLF) of Air India too has improved, reaching 74.7 per cent in October 2012 from 64.7 per cent  in July 2012.

The on-time performance of the airline has improved during the last three months, ranging between 84 and 87 per cent.  

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has asked Air India to further improve its passenger load factor and on-time performance while aggressively implementing its various customer friendly initiatives.

Air India has recently taken several customer-friendly measures, including the launch of attractive fare schemes, ensuring maintenance of aircraft schedules coupled with improved utilisation of aircraft.


AIR TRAFFIC SOARS 13% ON FESTIVAL SEASON PERKS

The number of people travelling by domestic airlines grew by over 13 per cent in October, as high demand during holiday season arrested a five-month downward streak, with low-cost carrier IndiGo retaining its position as the market leader. The total number of passengers carried by scheduled domestic airlines grew to 45.55 lakh in October, from 40.18 lakh in previous month, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a release.

IndiGo carried the largest 12.66 lakh passengers, commanding a market share of 27.8 per cent in the month of October. Its market share has risen from 27.2 per cent in the previous month, when it had carried 10.94 lakh passengers.

National carrier Air India also saw its market share growing from 19.3 per cent in September to 20.8 per cent, while its number of passengers rose from 7.75 lakh to 9.49 lakh.

Private carriers like Jet Airways and SpiceJet also saw increase in their market shares and numbers of passengers in October, which is considered a holiday season due to various festivals.

In terms of market share, IndiGo was followed by Jet Airways and JetLite combined (24.7 per cent), Air India (20.8 per cent), Spice Jet (19.1 per cent) and GoAir (7.6 per cent).Crisis-ridden Kingfisher Airlines, which once had second largest market share but is currently grounded, did not fly any passenger in October. It had carried just 1.41 lakh passengers in September with a market share of 3.5 per cent.
