The introduction of four-year-under-graduate-programme (FYUP) has become the flavour of the season with the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) planning to go for it in 2014-15 after its older counterpart Delhi University deciding to adopt it from the very next academic session.
The Ambedkar University of Delhi (AUD), the youngest university in the government sector, has already introduced multi-exit four-year undergraduate degree programme.
JNU has sent a proposal to the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the innovation university scheme for starting under graduate school in the university. Though JNU VC S K Sopory confirmed that a proposal has been sent to the UGC, he refused to answer whether it was for a a three-year or four-year course.
'We have sent the proposal to the UGC and once we get a positive response we will decide on the course structure and content' said Sopory.
The JNU proposal to the UGC mentions though mentions that the school of under graduate studies will have courses which will be feeder for the Post Graduate courses, that are already being run on the campus.
According to sources, 'DU is introducing FYUP under the similar concept of having feeder undergraduate courses for the post graduate programmes. Under the scheme a student having completed FYUP can earn the credits to become a PG in major discipline in a year's time.'
As of now JNU runs three years under-graduate degree programmaes for the foreign languages. Theses students have to do two year course to get the Masters degree.
'The time spent for becoming master would thus remain the same even when the FYUP is introduced,' source added.
