A high-level meeting was convened by the Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday on Adhaar cards, where it was decided that they could be used for opening bank accounts.
The meeting was attended by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairman Nandan Nilekani, Delhi chief secretary PK Tripathi, various senior bank officials and others.
Delhi government officials said since the poor face a lot of problems when they go to banks to open accounts, Adhaar cards would come in handy.
Sources said the Delhi government also wants to integrate Antoyodya Anna Yojna with the Adhaar scheme.
The government also plans to use the Adhaar database to identify actual beneficiaries of various schemes and plug loopholes in the PDS as well.
At present, around Rs 1,400 crore is the annual budget for around 30,000 residents of the city through Electronic Clearance Service.
In the meeting, the issue of delivery of UID cards was also discussed between Delhi government and UIDAI officials.
Sources said lakhs of UID cards need to be delivered and that is the main cause of concern at present. The chief secretary suggested that at the divisional commissioner's office, provision should be made for delivering UID cards.
Earlier, not satisfied with the pace of enrollment for Adhaar, Dikshit had asked Nilekani to expedite the process in the city.
Officials said five private agencies were hired last year to collect bio-metric data and registration of citizens for issuance of Adhaar numbers.
On Wednesday, Nilekani said that 93 percent Adhaar cards have been delivered to the government.
Meanwhile, officials said thousands of residents have not received Adhaar numbers months after enrollment for the same.
