Expressing concern over the deteriorating health of environment engineer GD Agarwal, better known as Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike in Haridwar for 91 days, a group of activist on Thursday demanded that government should now meet the demands of Agarwal so that he can end his hunger strike.

Agarawal has been demanding that all hydro projects on Alaknanda and Mandakini river basin should be scrapped. ‘Given that one of main reasons for the Uttarakhand disaster is the environmental damage from dam construction, our plea to the government is to announce an immediate moratorium on dams on the Alaknanda and Mandakini, to save this precious life of GD Agarwal, and call for a genuine, composite and holistic dialogue on this subject at the earliest,’ said Magsaysay award-winner Rajendra Singh in Delhi.

The 80-year-old former IIT professor had started his hunger strike on 13 June this year .
