A march by Aam Admi Party (AAP) volunteers protesting alleged inflated water and power bills was stopped on its way to the residence of Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit at Motilal Nehru Marg on Monday.
Police stopped a total of 272 autorickshaws carrying AAP volunteers. Many of them carried national flags and shouted anti-government slogans. The protest began from Sundar Nagri area where AAP founder leader Arvind Kejriwal’s indefinite hunger strike against inflated utility bills entered the tenth day. Kejriwal wasn’t a part of the protest march.
The rally led to massive traffic jams on the Ring Road with traffic police not allowing movement from Arterial road to Mathura Road through Bhairav Mandir Marg. AAP spokesperson Aswathi Muralidharan said the autorickshaws represented 272 municipal wards in Delhi. The protest began despite Delhi Police refusing to allow too many autorickshaws to hit the roads. ‘They failed to explain under which law they were prohibiting the autos. If we are stopped, we will protest,’ Muralidharan said. Kejriwal’s health is reportedly stable. Doctors said he had lost seven kg since beginning fast on March 23.
