Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP from Sangrur in Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, on Thursday met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and urged him to ensure peace in the state, which has been witnessing protests over the alleged desecration of holy Sikh books. Party leaders Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh and Durgesh Pathak were also present.

Mann apprised the Home Minister that the situation in Punjab was “very disturbing” . Sources said the Home Minister told him that he has already spoken to Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal on the issue.

Meanwhile, chairman of International Sikh Council Muktiyar Singh also met Singh and urged him to ensure that people living in the state are safe and peace is maintained.

Punjab has been witnessing a spate of protests over alleged incidents of sacrilege. Concerned over the desecration of Sikh holy books in Punjab, the Home Minister assured Badal of “all possible help” from the Centre to control the situation. Singh told Badal that the Centre was concerned over the situation in Punjab and asked him to take steps to maintain peace in the state. He promised all help to defuse the tension in the state.

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh accused the Punjab government of delaying probe into the desecration of the Sikh holy book and said no steps were taken for four months to stop the violence. “The state government has totally failed to work in the interest of the people of Punjab,” he said.
