The national Capital gets 96 per cent of its child labourers from other states, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said on Thursday.
The Commission held a meeting with representatives of Child Welfare Committees officials from State Labour and Social Welfare departments, Delhi Police, Delhi State Legal Services Authority and NGOs to discuss ways to tackle child labour in the country with a special focus on Delhi.
“It was pointed out that 96 per cent of the children engaged in labour in Delhi are trafficked from other states and only four per cent are from Delhi itself.
“It was felt that trafficking of children is increasing fast which is leading to child sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation,” senior NCPCR official said.
NCPCR Chairperson Stuti Kacker suggested that the District Task Forces and Steering Committees created for the purpose should meet regularly and the status of rescued children be reviewed.
The Delhi High Court in 2009 had approved the ‘Delhi Action Plan’ for total abolition of child labour in the national Capital. The NCPCR had prepared the action plan following consultations with various stakeholders.
The meeting also suggested reviewing the Plan of Action every two months.
