The data in possession with Millennium Post revealed that a total number of 930 places do not have street lights and these stretches are inviting the criminals. Apart from these dark stretches, there are 274 vulnerable routes on which criminals remain highly active.
‘After identifying the vulnerable routes, we have redeployed the patrolling staff. Also, pickets, PCR vans, motorcycle patrols have been increased in these areas. Out of 274 routes, 255 routes are taken by women returning from entertainment hubs, malls, metro stations, institutional areas, markets, railway stations and bus terminals,’ a senior police official said.
According to data, there are 187 dark spots, 16 vulnerable routes in outer district that has 15 police stations and 84 PCR vans. North-west district has the least number of dark stretches, three and seven vulnerable routes.
On the other hand, there are 149 poorly lit areas in south-west district and around 126 dark spots in south-east and 71 dark stretches in south Delhi. The number of these spots in other districts are — central (44), north (53), west (76), north-east (43), east (64) and New Delhi (53).
However, in March this year, in a written reply to Rajya Sabha minister of state for home M Ramachandran said that there are a total number of 1,582 dark stretches out of which a maximum of 277 dark spots have been identified in south-west district.
‘Identifying these spots from time-to-time helps us take necessary measures to curb crime in these areas by deploying proper number of police staff. Delhi police has 32,000 policemen and
8,000 patrolling van staffers for 1.70 crore residents of the national capital,’ the official added.
While visiting few of the dark stretches, which include the area near Ambience Mall where female journalist Soumya Vishwanathan was murdered, after 9 pm Millennium Post found a complete absence of police officers.
Surprisingly, New Delhi district that has only eight police stations is facilitated with the highest number of PCR vans to ensure safety of the VIPs residing in the area. Out of 800 PCR vans, 79 vans used to patrol in the area. On the contrary, west Delhi, which has the highest number of police stations (18) under its jurisdiction has only 73 PCR vans.
The disparity is apparent in other districts too. East has 76, north-east 70, south 77, south-east 71, south-west 81, north 59, central 54 north-west 67 and outer 84.
‘If the civic agencies are taking time in providing better lightning in these 930 dark stretches so the increased police presence might help in curbing crime,’ a female constable in south Delhi said.
