An RTI enquiry has revealed that 86 per cent of the mid day meal samples have failed the quality test in 2014 so far. It further revealed that in past five years (2010-14), 90 per cent of the samples failed the quality test, conducted by government.
In 2014, 142 samples were sent for testing, out of which only 19 managed to pass the test. Around 18 lakh mid-day meal units have been consumed in 2014 so far. Similarly in 2013, where around 19 lakh mid-day meal units were consumed, out of total 626 samples that were sent for examination, only 125 samples were found usable. In 2012, only 59 sample were found consumable out of 559.
The aim of the mid-day meal scheme is to provide balanced meal to school children aged between
6 to 11 years of age. According to the official data, in past five years, 2,244 samples were tested by the government, out of which 1,995 failed the quality test. Only 10.96 per cent of food samples have met the quality standards prescribed by the civic bodies. Since 2010, approximately over 90 lakh units of mid-day meals have been consumed by the primary students of government schools. The total expenditure on mid-day meals in the past five year was more than 48 crore.
Earlier, Millennium Post had reported that the food allotted for one student is being served to at least two, leaving the children malnourished. Recently, 22 girl students had taken ill after consuming midday meal at a government school in East Delhi’s Patparganj area.
