The arrested accused were identified as Sunil (35), <g data-gr-id="31">Harender</g> Kumar, alias Tori (48), Joginder, alias Jugnu (38) and Chander Pal (52).
Investigations have revealed that Sunil, a handcart puller who was hired to transport the jewellery, had tipped off the robbers about the movement,” said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).
Verma further said that of the 275 kg of silver ornaments allegedly robbed by the gang, the cops have already recovered around 80 kg and efforts are on to locate the remaining items. According to the police, during the armed robbery on May 11, one of the dacoits was wearing a police uniform and brandishing a pistol to threaten the victims.
The incident was reported to police by one Amit Kumar, manager and partner in Rail Cargo Company.
He had sent his workers, Govind and Dilip along with two handcart pullers Sunil and Hari Singh, to collect the delivery of 11 cartons containing silver jewellery from Old Delhi railway station, which was to arrive by a train from Rajkot.
Kumar received a call at around 7:40 am from one of his workers, Ramesh, who told him that some cartons have been robbed off and the robbers also took them in a vehicle.
When he reached his office, another employee, Ram Kumar, told him that after loading the cartons on the handcart at around 7:30 am, a white-coloured Scorpio had waylaid them. Two persons alighted from the SUV.
One of them was in police uniform with a pistol in his hand and he started threatening them. There were three more persons with the one who posed as a cop, who abducted Govind, Dalip, Sunil and Hari Singh and went away. After this, one Xylo car came to the spot and three people took four cartons of jewellery with them.
Next, three more persons reached the spot on a <g data-gr-id="33">motor cycle</g> and tried to take away one carton, but failed.
After that, one of the abducted persons, Govind Singh, informed his office that they were released by the robbers in a forested area near Noida. During interrogation, <g data-gr-id="38">team</g> of Kotwali Police Station questioned all the four. Sunil eventually broke down and disclosed the conspiracy.
“He disclosed that his nephew Jugnu, along with Tahir, Sant Raj and the others hatched a conspiracy to rob the silver jewellery. He gave them all the vital <g data-gr-id="40"><g data-gr-id="41">informations</g></g> about <g data-gr-id="42">place</g>, timing and route.
Jugnu and Sunil both were arrested in this case and further interrogated in detail after which they further disclosed the whereabouts of accused Tahir and Sant Raj, living somewhere in Greater Noida and Bulandshahar,” said Verma.
