‘The best way to avoid falling prey to the disease is to avoid mosquito bites which maybe done by wearing full sleeve clothes, using mosquito repellents, coils and not allow mosquitoes to breed by draining out the water from desert coolers/window air coolers (or use insecticides), tanks, barrels, drums, buckets etc,’ said SP Byotra, senior consultant, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The number of cases in the national Capital rose to 725 on Monday, while 56 other cases are from adjoining areas of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Two people have succumbed to the vector-borne disease so far this year.

Characterised by sudden high fever, body ache, headache, vomiting and nausea, there is no specific cure for the disease.

‘Since there is no vaccination for the disease, as when symptoms arrive, paracetamol may be taken to bring down fever and joint pain. Physicians should be consulted immediately after symptoms appear,’ said S P Byotra.

According to data collected from WHO and Ministry of Health and Family affairs, all over India till October 2014, 48 people died because of dengue and 21,722 cases have been registered.

As many as 193 people died due to dengue and 75,808 people suffered from the disease in 2013 all over the country. In 2012, 242 people died and 50,202 suffered from dengue in India.

‘In some of these cases, death can occur. Lots of fluids like lemonade, juices and water should be consumed ,’ said another doctor.
