Seven people were arrested on Monday for attacking a woman police officer in Thane district, police said.
According to an official, Assistant Police Inspector Priyatama Muthe of Virar police station was beaten up by five criminals late Sunday night. She sustained minor injuries after a group of people assaulted her while she was registering a case against a young boy for kidnapping a minor girl. She is undergoing treatment in the local hospital. At least two women police personnel and their male colleagues were also roughed up by the mob, said police.
A family from Virar had filed a complaint stating that their underage daughter has been kidnapped. Later the girl herself came to the police station and filed a complaint against Amit Jha, alleging that he had kidnapped her, the official said.
The police say that the couple claimed to have been married but since the girl was a minor, the boy was arrested for ‘kidnapping’ her.
Later, Jha came to the police station and asked that he be given custody of the underage girl. ‘When Muthe refused to grant the girl’s custody to him, he came with four other men and attacked her and also roughed up another police officer,’ the official said. Outraged family members the accused barged into the police station with a few other people.
One of the persons in the group threw a mobile phone at the officer which hit her ear.
‘Seven men, including Jha, have been arrested in the case,’ said the police.
All the accused, including three women, are residents of Mira Road. They have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) among others.
This is the third such incident in three months where a policewoman was attacked and molested. Cases of molestation of women cops were registered during the 11 August riots at Azad Maidan and during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
