Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Thursday expressed his happiness over the arrangements made by the Jadavpur University to celebrate its 60th convocation inside the university campus.

Speaking to media on the sideline of the programme, Tripathi said this year’s convocation was a grand success. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that there was some agitation among a section of students in JU last year and therefore many of these students refused to take awards. They demanded the resignation of the then Vice-Chancellor as he called in police within the university campus to lift students’ blockade.

While speaking about the programme, Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University Professor Suranjan Das said, “I will resign on the same day when I will see that I am unable to perform my duty as the head of the institution.” This was hinted at the previous year’s incident.

Degrees were conferred on all successful candidates from various streams in the university during the programme which took place at open air theatre on Thursday. The degrees like Master of Philosophy, Master of Arts, Master of Science in various streams, Master in Architecture, Engineering and Technology, Computer Application, Media Management, Law and Management and others were conferred on the successful candidates.

Degree of Doctor of Literature has been conferred on Avinash K. Dixit, a professor of Economics Emeritus at Princeton University and Ravi S Dhavan, a retired Chief Justice, while the Doctor of Science was conferred on Srikumar Banerjee and Goverdhan Mehta. Banerjee is a Chair Professor at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre whereas Mehta is a leading researcher of chemical science.

Professor Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, said: “Our Universities must pursue the twin track of advancing frontiers of knowledge in all domains and facilitate conducive learning environment as well as translating new knowledge into frontline technologies that benefit the nation through a carefully nurtured innovation ecosystem ahead of others.”
