With this, the number of arrests in the case has gone up to 10 and has also indicated the involvement of private companies in the nexus.
On Thursday, sources close to the investigation in Special Cell told Millennium Post, ‘Along with the CDR of Jaitley, call details of around 50 more persons were also sought, including top politicians, bureaucrats and corporate personnel. After interrogating the arrestees, we would be able to extract the names of the targeted persons and the motives behind accessing their CDRs.’
The arrested persons have been identified as Gopal (assistant sub-inspector at Khajoori Khas police station), Harish (head constable at Shahdara police station), Harish Kumar (constable posted in the office of assistant commissioner of police, East Delhi), while the other three, all private detectives, have been named as Alok Gupta, Mehraj Saifi and Punit Verma. Earlier in February this year, a Delhi police constable, Arvind Dabas, along with three detectives – Neeraj, Anurag and Nitish – were apprehended.
‘The persons recently arrested are not directly related to the Jaitley CDR case. However, these six persons were active in obtaining the CDRs of several others,’ the officer said. The accused were produced before Patiala court and sent to three-day police remand. ‘Their police custody will help us reach the mastermind behind this CDR racket,’ he added. Source in special cell told Millennium Post, ‘Soon after the arrest of Arvind Dabas and the other three detectives, the names of these six persons, including three cops, had emerged. On Thursday, we arrested them after they confessed to their involvement on in-camera interrogation.’ The source added, ‘The six accused had connections with the earlier arrestees. They are part of the same chain. There were two gangs, one headed by Arvind Dabas and the other by Gopal. Arvind accessed the CDRs of Jaitley, while Gopal obtained that of several politicians, including BJP Delhi unit president Vijay Goel.’
In April, Delhi police had filed a comprehensive chargesheet against the four accused that indicated the role of corporate houses behind Jaitley’s phone tapping. In March, Millennium Post had revealed that private corporate houses have played a key role in this illegal tapping because this special service was taken against a considerable sum of money which indicated the involvement of a corporate house.
Sanjeev Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell) said, ‘The CDR case had a higher level of conspiracy.’
