The incident took place on Tuesday late evening when Shanti Devi was alone at her four-storey house in School Block in Shakarpur area. After her husband’s death, she along with her son, Sunder (30), were staying on the ground and first floors. The top two floors were vacant.
On the day of the incident, when Sunder returned from work at around 11 pm, he found the doors open from inside. He went to his room and changed clothes. To have dinner, Sunder called his mother to come downstairs but he did not get any response. He went up to the first floor and saw her lying on the floor in a pool of blood with her throat slit.
The body was later sent for post-mortem. ‘In the initial investigation, it appears that she was strangulated with a dupatta. When she fell unconscious the accused slit her throat with a sharp object,’ an investigating officer said.
Sources say the accused was known to Devi as it seems that the accused got easy entry into the house. Sunder told police their pet dog only allows known persons inside. There was no sign of ransacking, but family members claimed that Rs 26 lakh were missing. The money was kept inside her almirah while gold jewellery kept in the same wardrobe were not taken.
Ajay Kumar, DCP (east), said, ‘Recently, Devi had sold a flat in Sonia Vihar for Rs 36 lakh and was planning to buy a plot in Faridabad. To fix the deal, she paid Rs 4 lakh as security deposit to the dealer and the rest was kept in the house.’ Police suspect insider role behind the crime.
