A 47-year-old Buddhist monk who was reportedly close to Dalai Lama, Tibetan spiritual leader, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his sister’s residence in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area.

On Saturday night, his sister found him hanging when she went to the victim’s, identified as TG Rimpoche, bedroom.

She then raised an alarm to call two other roommates of his. The other two were later identified as Rimpoche’s followers.

According to the police, a team reached the crime spot and rushed him to the nearby hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Meanwhile, another team reached the house to conduct their investigation. A suicide note, hand written in Tibetan language was recovered from a diary kept at the deceased’s study table.

On Sunday morning, the letter was sent for translation. Till late Sunday evening, the exact reason behind this extreme step has not been ascertained.

If sources are to be believed then the suicide note reads, ‘I have committed so many sins that God will not forgive me. I don’t have stamina to face the punishment to be given by God. Therefore, I am ending my life. No one is responsible for this. Please don’t cry for me. I deserve this.’

Another police official said, ‘The deceased was depressed over his health from the past one year. He was suffering from sleeplessness for which he was undergoing treatment.’ The claims made by the investigator were later confirmed to the senior police officials by his sister who was the first one to find him hanging from a ceiling fan.

During investigations, it also came to light that since 16 May, the verdict day of Assembly elections 2014, Rimpoche became silent and used to stay cut off from everything. He preferred to stay in his room all the time.

Further, it was learnt that his close relative contested elections from Arunachal Pradesh, whose identity has not been disclosed by the police. But he lost the elections that in turn made Rimpoche more depressed. He came to Delhi on 2 May, since then he was staying at his sister’s residence.
A senior police official, requesting anonymity said, ‘The suicide note recovered is not clearing the motive behind his death. In the note he had written some of his ideologies.’

A senior police official said, ‘We are investigating the case in all plausible angles. The content of the suicide note is being looked at.’
