Approximately 40 juvenile delinquents on Monday escaped from the Boys Observation Home in Mukherjee Nagar, after a section of the inmates resorted to arson. Among them, one was involved in a murder case.

‘The incident took place when the security staff was shifting two of them to another home in the city’, said the police. One of the juveniles was injured during the incident, when he hit his head into the wall.

‘The incident took place approximately at 2 pm at a juvenile justice home in Mukherjee Nagar, when two of them were being shifted to another one located in Majnu Ka Tila area,’ said Gnana Sambandan, deputy commissioner of police (north west).

According to sources one of the juveniles, involved in some heinous crimes, including a murder, was being shifted along with another boy to a juvenile house located in Majnu Ka Tila area. The boy opposed this and hit his head into the wall. After this he pretended that he was hit by another group that instigated violence in the house. Stone pelting was also reported in the shelter home.

The shelter houses nearly 180 juvenile delinquents. The home is run under the supervision of a metropolitan magistrate. Private security guards had been posted at the Boys’ remand home, but they failed to prevent the arsonists from escaping. Delhi police officials said that they were ready to intervene but under the Juvenile Justice Act, policemen are barred from entering juvenile remand homes.

Meanwhile police traced one of the juvenile from the nearby bus stand while others are still at large. Till late Monday night, the escaped juveniles remain absconding. In the absence of a complaint, police said that it was difficult to ascertain how many absconding juveniles were involved in heinous crimes.
