The incident took place on Thursday morning at around 9 am when the duo — Dolly (victim) and Jatin Arora (accused) indulged in a heated argument in their rented accommodation in Mohan Garden in Uttam Nagar. According to the police, Jatin doused his wife with kerosene after an argument over dowry demands. The couple got married in December last year.
Jatin’s family, however, claims that Dolly sustained the injuries while cooking. Jatin, who works in central Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar, was arrested over the statement of Dolly’s family.
“Neighbours claim that the couple quarreled regularly and Jatin used to thrash Dolly,” the officer
added. Jatin’s neighbours informed police about the incident, while his family members were trying to hide it.
During questioning, Jatin told the police that Dolly was cooking dinner when her clothes accidentally caught fire. Dolly shouted for help, but by the time she could be rescued she had received severe burns, he claimed.
Dolly’s brother Rahul told the police that Dolly had called up her father at 8.30 pm, and told him to reach her house with other family members. “She was saying that she would not survive,” Rahul said.
The case has been handed over to the SDM who is further probing it, a police official said.
Meanwhile, the victim is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung hospital where doctors said her condition is critical.
