Days after a national boxing champion in Haryana was arrested for helping a gangster escape from the custody of Delhi Police, the Crime Branch has now arrested a 22-year-old national gold medalist athlete for being a part of the conspiracy, police said on Monday.

The accused has been identified as Parveen, alias Lara, a resident of Sonepat in Haryana.

On July 30, he helped one gangster, Jitender, to escape from police custody while the 3rd Battalion DAP of Delhi Police was taking him to Narwana Court from Tihar Jail. Earlier, the cops had arrested 20-year-old Deepak Pahal, who is a national-level boxer and was a junior lightweight boxing national champion of 2011. He has also participated in various international boxing competitions.

“At the time of the incident, Jitender was escorted by four armed guards, who had boarded a Haryana Roadways Bus from ISBT, Delhi. On the way to Narwana, the bus was intercepted by armed assailants in two cars near village Sankhol, Bahadurgarh, Haryana at about 6 am. The assailants were ten in numbers and used chilli powder to execute their plan for Jitender’s escape.

In the meantime, the assailants also fired from their illegal weapons and the escort in-charge also retaliated with his service weapon. The assailants succeeded in taking away Jitender and they also robbed an MP 5 automatic gun from the escort party,” Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) said.

On August 5, a specific information was received that one of the identified criminal Parveen Panchi involved in the escape of Jitender would come to Narela area for search of a hideout and is making arrangements for the expenses. On this information, a trap was laid and he was apprehended.

During interrogation, he confessed to have committed this crime along with his associates.

For this purpose, they also robbed a i-20 car at gun point from Bawana area and most of the gang members were armed with weapons.
