294 kgs of red sandalwood seized by airport authorities

The product is in huge demand around south east Asian countries. There were four incidents of smuggling that occurred from September 2013 to December 2013.

A case of smuggling, weighing 12 kgs, was booked against employee of China Airways on 1 December, 2013. The goods were confiscated on the spot. In another incident, 140 kgs of red sandalwood smuggling was apprehended. A case was booked against employee of Air India on 23 October, 2013, in this regard said airport sources.

Red Sandalwood tops the list among items smuggled through airports in Delhi. Red Sandalwood or Red Sanders is a banned item. It cannot be exported and the trees cannot be felled. According to sources the wood isn’t in much demand in India.  However there is a huge market for these products in countries like Japan, China and Indonesia.
