Following the directions of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to act tough against the errant traffic violators on the eve of Shab-e-Barat, the Delhi Traffic police (DTP) impounded around 853 vehicles, mostly bikes, and fined 2,900 people were fined on Friday night for various traffic offences, including rash driving and stunt biking on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat.
During a special drive launched on the occasion, all those violators who managed to give police a slip taking advantage of the crowd last night, may still face action as registration numbers of more than 13,300 vehicles have been noted and police are in the process of sending challans to their homes.
‘All those bikers who could not be fined on the spot due to their large numbers will get challan delivered at their home,’ Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said.
The video footage is being analysed for sending challan to people who indulged in triple riding, riding without helmet and for rash driving.
In the high security New Delhi district, at least 259 bikers were challaned, 75 vehicles were impounded, 91 people were issued fine for riding without helmet while 36 got the ticket for triple riding.
According to Special Commissioner (Law and Order) Taj Hassan, police strongly dealt with traffic violators and restricted stunt biking on the occasion. Traffic police was deployed at 182 strategic locations from 10 pm to 6 am on Saturday. Major roads were barricaded and special checking teams equipped with alcometers were deployed at major intersections to detect and prosecute traffic violations and ensure smooth traffic. People were allowed to take Mathura Road from central and other parts of Delhi to reach Hazrat Nizamuddin, he said.
There were isolated incidents of hooliganism reported in some areas like Seelampur and Usmanpur areas, police said.
