A 26-year-old man was killed in a road accident soon after he left a police station, where he and his father were summoned for questioning regarding an abduction case, at southeast Delhi’s Okhla Industrial Area on Wednesday night.
While the police claimed that the deceased, Jagannath Shah, who was a private tutor in the area, left
without informing the cops, his relatives claimed that he was being implicated in the case. The incident led to a violent confrontation between the police and agitated locals on Thursday morning and the police reportedly had to resort to mild force to bring the situation under control.
The locals also blocked the road near Crown Plaza Hotel, causing a severe traffic jam in the area during the peak morning hours and also pelted stones at a DTC bus. Later, senior police officials arrived at the spot to pacify the crowd and ensured an unbiased probe.
Jagannath and his father, Ram Babu, were accused of abducting a 19-year-old girl, who was one of Jagannath’s students.
According to the police, the girl’s family called them up at 9 pm and reported the matter, after which Jagannath and Ram Babu were summoned for questioning.
At around 9.40 pm, Jagannath suddenly went out of the police station premises without informing any official. That is when the incident reportedly happened. Jagannath was crushed to death by a speeding dumper truck, near the police station in Okhla Industrial Area. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
A separate case was registered and the driver of the truck has not yet been arrested.
According to a source, the 19-year-old girl had reportedly come to Jagannath’s residence for her
classes on May 27 evening and refused to go home after that. Jagannath’s family even claimed that the woman was infatuated with her tutor.
Later, Jagannath and his father personally went to drop the girl but by then, her family had already called up the Police Control Room.
Later, Jagannath and his father were allegedly picked up by the cops. Jagannath’s relatives even claimed that the woman’s family was also allegedly beating them up inside the police station and <g data-gr-id="39">Jaggannath</g> escaped to save himself from the brutality, only to be killed by the unfortunate accident.
