26 hurt in clashes after undertrial lynched in UP jail

An undertrial lodged at a district jail here was beaten to death allegedly by prison guards for harassing a female colleague following which the inmates clashed with jail officials injuring 26 people, including six policemen. 

Superintendent of Police Bharat Singh said that the inmate, Shyam Kumar Yadav, had harassed a female jail guard on Saturday evening. 

Agitated with his act, the jail guards assaulted Yadav, who later died at the district hospital, he said. 
When the inmates came to know about the undertrial's death, they clashed with the jail guards and indulged in violence, the SP said, adding 26 people, including six policemen, were injured in the incident. 

Police lobbed tear gas shells, used water cannon and fired rubber bullets in a bid to control the situation, which was brought under control in some time, he said.  The SP said that the matter is under investigation.
