This happened for the first time in the Delhi Police force. More than 25,000 police personnels, senior officers and media took seats in a jam packed Indira Gandhi Stadium for the felicitation ceremony of ‘Mass Promotions’ on Saturday. More than 25,000 police personnels were promoted where Home Minister Rajnath Singh attended the function as the chief guest.
In his address, Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar Verma stressed saying: “Constabulary is the backbone of police system and when I took charge, I was pained to see that constables have not received their due promotions even after giving 28 years of their service to the force. Stagnation in the lower ranks was a deep concern for me.”
The families of those who were promoted were more than elated. Some even got emotional.
“I married a constable. Now, I am a proud wife of a Head Constable,” Rekha Gulia had tears in her eyes as her husband got promotion from constable to head constable after 25 years.
Sohail Abbas who has been promoted from Head Constable to Assistant Sub Inspector said: “I got my daughter married when I was a constable in July, then got promoted to Head Constable and now I am an ASI. This has elevated by social status for sure.”
Addressing the gathering, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said: “It is a rainfall of promotions in Delhi Police. We are also planning to create 15,000 more job vacancies in the Delhi Police force.”
In an interesting development, 10,000 “Thanks” notes were handwritten by Limca award winning calligrapher SI Shyamalan who is posted in the LG Office.
“We might be a role model for the police force for other states. If the lower levels of the force, who do actual policing are unsatisfied, you cannot expect a massive change,” said R A Sanjeev, DCP Establishment.
