225 pehelwans rounded up by Delhi police to ensure fair polls

In a bid to conduct free and fair election here in national capital on 4 December, Delhi police have flexed their muscles and nabbed 225 pehalwans (wrestlers) from the Delhi border areas surrounding of UP and Harayana, to prevent any malpractice during voting.

As the election elections round the corner, almost all the parties are trying to woo wrestlers and body-builders. The akharas in Delhi and surrounding areas, which are traditional training centers that groom wrestlers, are now deserted, its members busy in election campaigns by guarding politicians, organising rallies, and if necessary, for booth capturing and bogus voting. The Delhi police has already rounded up about 250 anti-social elements, near Najafgarh sub division, most of them wrestlers from Haryana and UP, till now said the official.

‘We have rounded up about 100 pehalwans under the IPC section 107/51. Also around 90 pehalwans were rounded up under the IPC section 107/50. We have also booked 11 pehalwans under the Excise Act, 10 Pehalwans under the Illegal Arms Act and 14 for other reasons’, said the official.

‘Police is not taking any chances and are keep a tight vigil over suspected persons in these areas. They even verified their identity, and if necessary they were even asked about their purpose of visit to Delhi’, said the official.

However, he mentioned that they are the ones, who neither succeed as sportspersons nor get jobs and get lured into such activities. ‘Some of the politicians promise them jobs and lure them with money’, the official said.
