Sunanda Pushkar death (17 January)

Just after a Twitter controversy where former Union Minister Shashi Tharoos’s wife Sunanda Pushkar accused Mehr Tarar, a Pakistani columnist, of trying to create trouble in her marriage, Sunanda was found dead at The Leela Palace hotel in South Delhi. Even after 11 months of investigation, during which different theories popped up, the Delhi Police were unable to solve the case.

Danish woman gang-rape
(14 January)
A 51-year-old Danish woman was robbed and gang raped by seven persons including two juveniles at Connaught place. The victim had come to India on a tourist VISA. On the day of the incident, she lost her way and had approached the group of men, asking them for directions. All the accused were arrested within two days of the heinous act.

Lajpat Nagar Robbery (28 January)

A businessman, Rajesh Kumar Kalra and his three associates were robbed of around Rs 8 crore at Lajpat Nagar by armed assailants, while he was on the way to deposit the money in a bank. Months after the robbery, the Delhi Police managed to nab 13 persons, including police officer from Haryana. Kalra was already charge-sheeted in the Hansie Cronjie match fixing case.

Nido Tania murder (29 January)
Nido Tania (19), son of Congress MLA from Arunachal Pradesh was beaten up in an altercation at Lajpat Nagar. He died of his injuries next morning at his sister’s residence in South Delhi. Those responsible were later arrested. They had passed racial comments on Nido, who responded by breaking the shop’s glassdoor. Nido was beaten up with iron rods and sticks.

Salouni Road-rage case (21 July)

Five youths assaulted three pedestrians for not giving passage to their car and killed one of them at Kotla Mubarakpur area in the early hours of July 21. The victim, Akha Salouni, 29, and his two friends were walking on the lane when the car brushed against one of them. Soon a fight broke out which prompted Salouni’s friends to flee. All three accused were nabbed later that day.

Delhi zoo tragedy (23 September)
A white tiger attacked and killed a 19-year-old man who allegedly jumped off a barricade into an enclosure at the National Zoological Park. The victim, Maqsood, was mentally ill and was a drug addict. Witnesses said the tiger grabbed the young man by the neck as horrified onlookers at the zoo shouted and pelted stones at the animal to try and save the victim.

Jahnvi ahuja kidnapping (28 September)
After a wide campaign on the social media Jahnvi Ahuja, a three-year-old child who went missing from India Gate, was found at west Delhi’s Janakpuri area. The Delhi Police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone with information of the girl. Delhi Police are still clueless about the culprits who had kidnapped the girl.

Trilokpuri violence (23 October)

Two groups of people pelted stones at each other over Diwali rituals that later took a shape of three-day violence between the residents of Trilokpuri area. Four people were shot at during a clash between two communities and 33 people were arrested. Delhi Police, RAF and Central Reserve Police Force personnel had to intervene and curfew was imposed for about a week.

Honour Killing (14 November)
A final year student of Sri Venkateswara College, was murdered by her family for marrying her boyfriend outside her caste. Bhavna Yadav (21), was strangled by her parents and uncle at their southwest Delhi’s home after which her body was quietly cremated in Alwar. Her parents — Jagmohan, a local Congress party member, and Savitri — had been arrested.

Utkarsh murder case (18 November)

Utkarsh Verma (13) was kidnapped and later killed by a family friend and his accomplice. On 18 November, the boy failed to return home and his mother received a ransom call demanding
Rs 1 crore. The next day, Utkarsh’s body was found in a drain. Days after the murder, police had arrested Pratap Singh Sisodiya, who was the victim’s family-friend and one Siddharth Sharma.

Kamla Nagar ATM heist (29 November)

Two bikers gunned down a security guard and robbed Rs 1.5 crore from an ATM kiosk in Kamla Nagar in broad daylight. Custodians of a van belonging to a private firm were refilling money into the ATM, when two men on a bike arrived and shot dead the security guard and  fled with a bag containing money. Delhi Police failed to ascertain the identities of the accused.

Uber cab rape case (5 December)
A 25-year-old woman was raped in an Uber cab that she had hired from Vasant Vihar. Shiv Kumar Yadav (32), the accused driver, had parked the car at an isolated place and raped her. After the incident, he dropped her home and fled to Mathura. He was arrested by the Delhi Police a day later. The transport department had put a countrywide ban on Uber cab services.

Acid attack on a lady doc (23 December)
In a bid to teach a lesson for rejecting his proposal, a doctor hired two juveniles in lieu of Rs 25,000 to throw acid on his friend and colleague Amrit Kaur. Two days later, Delhi Police managed to nab all the four accused. Ashok Yadav, the accused doctor, used to work with Amrit at ESI hospital. She lost some sight in her right eye after the attack and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS.
