10 rebel Cong MLAs may join BJP or form new outfit

Uncertainty looms large over the future of 10 rebel Congress MLAs as the political crisis in Uttarakhand came to an end on Wednesday, with the Centre revoking President’s rule in the hill state. There are conflicting reports about them either joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or forming their own outfit.

The rebels, barring Rekha Arya, who had won from Someshwar Assembly seat in the 2014 by-poll, met in New Delhi on Wednesday to chalk out the future plan of action. The group plans to meet BJP chief Amit Shah on Thursday, following which they might join the party on May 13 or 14.

However, one of the rebel MLAs Umesh Sharma Kau told Millennium Post: “We have not decided whether we would be joining the BJP or not. But we held a meeting today with others (rebel MLAs) to chalk out further plans.”

“We may form our own party but will be able to inform only after a couple of days," he added. Denying the possibility of reuniting with the Congress, Kau said, “We have come too far and have no regrets as our action was for the people and development of Uttarakhand. There is no looking back for us."

The lawmaker said they have united to defeat Harish Rawat and his team in the next Assembly elections.
