Youth mowed down by truck while collecting money for puja

A youth who was trying to take money from a lorry for a puja, was mowed down on Bojkul-Agra Road in East Midnapore. Then he was hit by another speeding truck.

The police said, Bapi Patra, the 30-year-old youth succumbed to his injury in a local hospital. The killer truck, however, managed to escape the spot. The police have learnt that some local youth have been taking puja subscriptions from the running trucks. Patra was one among the club members who was trying to grab the note of Rs 100 while another speeding truck crushed him.

The club members blocked the road in protest of the accident. “Some of the club members started ransacking the trucks. The truck drivers on the other hand started retaliating there. The things had taken a worse turn before the police reached there,’ said a local resident.

The police arrested some of the club members and three truck drivers after the incident. Patra’s body was sent to post-mortem.

In another incident, a middle aged woman, Dipannita Ghosh Mondal was riding pillion in a motorbike driven by her husband Samit Mondal. They collided with an unknown car. Both the riders fell on the ground. Dipannita received heavy injuries.

The local rescued them to the hospital. Dipannita succumbed to her injury, but her husband survived. The family members of the Dipannita lodged FIR against the unknown vehicle, saying the house wife was returning home from a temple after offering prayers. The killer vehicle is yet to be traced.
