Youth gets 11-yr jail, fined Rs 1L for possessing heroin

A Delhi court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old man, caught with 300gm heroin outside a hotel, to 11 years in jail. The court also clapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him.

Special NDPS Judge Shail Jain awarded the punishment to Ghanshyam for the offences under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, while refusing to take a lenient view towards him.

"Considering that Ghanshyam was found in possession of 300gm heroin, no lenient view is to be taken in his favour. Therefore, he is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 11 years and pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh," the Judge said.

The court, while convicting Ghanshyam, relied on testimonies of police officials saying they "inspire confidence and their statements are duly corroborated with the documents."
