Vigilance Branch forms teams to check internal corruption

In a bid to combat corruption in the Delhi Police, the Delhi Police Vigilance Branch has constituted Surveillance Teams to keep an eye on any act of corruption by Delhi Police personnel. In two such checks by the special surveillance team of the Vigilance Branch, two Assistant Sub-Inspectors and two constables of the traffic police were detected indulging in corrupt practices.

“These teams headed by Inspectors of the Vigilance Unit, conduct surprise checks unobtrusively at various intersections of the city from time to time, with particular focus on the visible wings of Delhi Police such as Traffic, PCR Vans, Beat Officers. On detecting any public dealing of a suspicious nature involving the policemen on field duty, the Vigilance Branch officials confront the concerned public person and the policemen with the irregularities detected,” said a senior police official in Vigilance.

“In the first incident, on November 24, the Vigilance team checked the traffic staff at Brar Square in Delhi Cantt and found that ASI Mahabir Singh had collected Rs 500 from a truck driver without issuing a challan, and when the Vigilance team along with the driver approached the ASI, the latter hurriedly issued a challan of Rs 1,000 for his defence but the challan did not bear the signature of the driver, rendering the suspected bribery rather obvious,” the official added.

In the second incident on November 25, the Vigilance team checked the traffic staff at Mukarba Chowk on G T Karnal Road and found that Constable Puneet collected illegal entry money from two truck drivers.
