Unit sealed for sex determination

A team of medical and police officers sealed a diagnostic centre in Ghaziabad, that was allegedly involved in illegal sex determination on Friday night. This is the third diagnostic centre sealed in Ghaziabad district in this year under Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act.

'We usually seal the diagnostic machines in such cases, but since the diagnostic centre was locked and owners fled the scene, we have to seal the entire premises,' said Ajay Aggarwal, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Ghaziabad.

Om Polyclinic Ultrasound and Pathology is situated on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border in Shalimar Garden area. It was being run illegally in a residential flat at B-13, Ashtha Apartment.

It was being run by two doctors, identified as Mallick and Aggarwal. The entire staff, along with the doctors, have fled. The case was exposed after when a local news channel conducted a sting operation. 'Their clients were mainly from Delhi region,' added Aggarwal. Under PNDT Act, police cannot arrest the persons and and trial should be conducted directly in the court of chief judicial magistrate after recommendation of a high power committee headed by Chief Medical Officer.

'I have called an urgent meeting of the committee on Monday to get the mandatory approval for trial of the accused,' informed Aggarwal.

There are over three dozen diagnostic centres in Sahibabad area most of which are being run in residential areas.

'The clients for Om Diagnostic were not from this region. Most of them were from Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh,' said Rajesh Khanna, a resident in the area. The medical department of Ghaziabad has sealed three diagnostic centres in this year so far.

In January, medical department had sealed National Diagnostic in Ghaziabad City, Shivan Diagnostic in Hapur was sealed in February and NDRF Diagnostic in Indirapuram was sealed in March.
