U’khand cloudburst: Three more bodies recovered, toll rises to 18

SDRF, NDRF, SSB, Assam regiment, ITBP, revenue and local police are pressed in service for rescue and relief operations at disaster-hit regions of this hill state. Additional forces deployed in Pithoragarh district, are searching for missing persons with the help of dog squads.  

Disaster management secretary Shailesh Bagauli told media on Sunday that Didihat and Thal tehsil of Pithoragarh district were worst hit by flashfloods and tones of debris in the wee hours of July 1 when cloud-bursts hit many places across the state. He informed that 160 families were severely hit in village Singhali, Bastadi and Naulda regions where three persons in Naulda village, 11 in Bastadi, and one in Charma lost their lives. So far, there is official report of 15 deaths, three seriously injured, 10 minor injured and 12 missing.

In Pithoragarh district, 12 buildings are partially damaged and four fully damaged. Total 164 cattle also died in natural catastrophe. Three seriously injured were shifted to district hospital via helicopter by rescue team. The other injured were admitted to ITBP hospital at Mirthi.

He told that for disaster-hit families, tents, food and other essential items has been arranged. They have been shifted to rehabilitation centre. Some 50 persons are living in schools and panchayat-ghar on temporary basis. Similarly, 150 homeless people have taken shelter at Inter College in Singhali. 

Out of 284 blocked roads, 110 have been reopened by Sunday. Soon, 174 blocked roads would also be cleared for vehicle movement. For Kumaon region, folding bridge and Valley Bridge would be installed where bridges washed away in flashfloods. Four trolleys would also be made available for better connectivity in Pithoragarh district.

The state met department has again forecasted heavy to medium rains (64.5 -115.5mm) in isolated places across the state. The state administration has requested to all citizens to remain alert for the next 24 hours.
