Karmadhakshya of Bhangar II panchayat samity was shot at when he was returning home after attending a meeting of Trinamool Congress near Cossipore at Bhangar in South 24-Parganas.
The incident led to a panic in the area as Trinamool Congress workers demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. The state food processing and horticulture minister and local MLA Abdur Rezzak Mollah visited the hospital and spoke to the victim’s family members.
Police said that the exact reason behind attacking Trinamool Congress leader Md Mizanul Alam is yet to be ascertained, but they suspect that old rivalry had led to the crime.
The incident took place when Alam was returning from Polerband area. The unidentified miscreants had attacked him from behind when he reached close to his house.
They had started firing indiscriminately. The victim started running from the area and it led to his narrow escape as the miscreants missed their target.
Alam received bullet injuries on his left hand. The victim’s neighbours came out of their house hearing the sound of firing and Alam’s cry for help. Realising that people will gather in the area and they will get caught, the miscreants had fled on motorbikes.
Police came to know from local people that there were around five to six people on three motorbikes. All of their faces were covered with pieces of clothes.
Local people took the victim to Jirangacha Primary Health Centre. He was later shifted to SSKM Hospital as his condition had deteriorated. The police initiated a probe in this connection but
are yet to arrest anyone. The investigating officers have taken statement of the victim.
Local Trinamool Congress workers and common people held a rally in the area protesting against the attack on Alam. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Shops remained close.
Police pickets have been posted in the area to maintain law and order. Police also spoke to the victim’s family members and friends to know whether he had rivalry with anyone or if he had got engaged into a brawl in the recent past.
