Traffic signs to ‘speak’ Hindi

From now on, the traffic sign boards and speed boards in the capital will both be in English and Hindi languages. The union home ministry has issued an order to the Delhi traffic police to that effect. Prior to this, the traffic signs boards could be found only in English.

‘The messages written on sign board indicating directions, speed and location installed by the traffic police are only in English. We have been asked to replace with Hindi or regional language,’ confirmed a senior traffic police officer to Millennium Post.

The Ministry of Home Affairs’ order, issued on 12 July, which itself was in Hindi, has also asked the senior cops to identify the signboards that need to replaced in their respective areas.

‘We have often noticed that visitors in Delhi struggle with the English-only sign boards,’ said the official. Delhi witnesses thousands of commuters specially from national capital region [NCR] comprised Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida. The national capital’s population comprises the people who are living in villages in the outskirts, majority of them are not able to read the messages written in English. This is an effort to make them feel comfortable in Delhi.

‘With the help of civic agencies, the installation process of such boards will be started very soon,’ said a senior police officer.
