‘Time to reset moral compass of society’

On a three-day visit to the state, including attending the valedictory function celebrating the 150 years of the Calcutta HC, the President of India Pranab Mukherjee said that it is the duty of the court to protect the rule of the law and the fundamental rights of the Constitution.

The programme was attended by the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee who said that the court had seen days of unparallel glory during the times of Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee and Sidhhartha Shankar Roy.

‘We are wrapping up the 150 years celebrations. I hope justice is meted out by court always and that we can say, What Bengal thinks on Sunday, India thinks tomorrow,’ said Banerjee.

Mukherjee visited Jadavpur University to release Bichitra, the Tagore Online Variorum.

Observing that dignity of a woman is inviolable, Mukherjee asked the audience, ‘Can we raise our head high when we look around ourselves?’. ‘It is high time for us .... let us have the high moral ground, and as Tagore said, Let us reset our moral compass,’ he said.
