‘This is just the beginning, more to follow’, says this optimistic middle class family

Cosmetics, electronic appliances, apparels are set to go cheap as the finance minister Arun Jaitley announced cuts in basic custom duty on various raw products in his maiden budget on Thursday. Middle class families in Delhi are ‘satisfied’ with the NDA government’s first budget. However, it hopes for more in future.

‘There was scope of improvement. But I believe more reforms will follow later. This is just the beginning’, said Rajeev Sharma, a businessman from Baldev Park in East Delhi, adding that decision to increase FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in insurance and defence was very much welcomed. This will bring more expertise into the sectors and create more jobs.’

He however, expressed his displeasure over exemption in tax limits. ‘Tax exemption should have been raised to Rs 4-5 lakh. More number of people could have benefited with that’, said Sharma, though his annual income is above Rs 5 lakh.

Meanwhile, his wife Gauri Sharma, a teacher in private school is happy with Jaitley’s efforts to curb inflation but argued that more investment could have been planned for health and education. ‘They have announced the creation of twelve more medical colleges. However, there is huge shortage of doctors in our country and private universities are very expensive to study in’, Gauri said. Their daughter Esha missed the AIIMS seat and is studying MBBS from a private university.  But, the couple who voted for Modi in general elections is optimistic that the country’s growth graph will be back on track soon, as promised by Jaitley in his budget speech.
