Tamil Nadu comeback to beat Mumbai 4-3

The IHF Federation cup hockey started on a promising note as Tamil Nadu came back from behind after being two-goals down to beat Mumbai 4-3 in the opening Group A encounter at the Shivaji stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu’s, 2009 India’s junior world cup player Amardeep Ekka was adjudged the man of the match for his effective play in the midfield. Mumbai pressed forward from the word go and a defensive error from Sendhil Kumar lead to him playing a foul against Rajat Sharma inside the D-box. Forward Sandeep Singh scored from the penalty corner in the third minute to hand Mumbai a dream start.

Mumbai added another in the 16th minute when midfielder Osafa Ur Rehman picked up Rajat Sharma on the left to hand him a lofted pass.  Rajat shot the ball towards the high end of right hand corner which goalkeeper Bharni Raja failed to stop.

Tamil Nadu upped the tempo form there on finding out wide spaces in the opponent’s wide areas. Their grip paid off when Stalin David scored from a penalty corner between the goalkeeper’s legs. A minute later Adam Sinclair found space to tap in an easy shot past Dixit when he received a pass from Satish inside the D-box.

In the second half Rafeeq guided the ball easily into the post after Allen found him towards the right front corner. Vinod Rayer then added the fourth for Tamil Nadu. Mumbai reduced the deficit 14 minutes later through Jayanta.

In a Group B match Punjab came from  two-goals behind to register a 3-3 draw against Uttar Pradesh. They equalised in the final minute.
