Spurious drugs scam re-emerges in J&K

The spurious drugs scam has re-emerged in Jammu and Kashmir after the Central Drug Laboratories entrusted by Union Health Ministry to collect samples registered 24 of them as ‘not of standard quality’.

An official letter addressed to state drug controller mentioned the drugs by name found out to be of substandard quality. ‘It’s been found by Central and Regional Drug Laboratory Kolkata and Chandigarh respectively that 24 drugs are of sub-substandard quality in hospitals of Jammu and Kashmir. Out of 50 drugs tested so far, 24  have found to be of low standard,’ said Nisar-ul-Hassan, president Doctors Association of Kashmir.

In the wake of the drugs scam, the Union Health Ministry had despatched an expert team from Central Drugs Control Organisation to collect samples. Around 156 samples of medicines were collected by the team from hospitals and chemists in the Valley.

The doctors amalgam accused chief minister Omar Abdullah of shielding the accused, including former health minister Sham Lal Sharma. ‘Around 500 children died in pediatric hospital alone while hundreds others at S K Institute of Medical Sciences. It wasn’t the laxity of doctors, but due to sub-standard medicines served to them’, Sharma said.

‘Ironically, the life saving drugs were found to be spurious in our state. Persons who have been charge sheeted in this spurious scam are still at large. It’s a case in which if you expose me, I will expose you in return is happening. If Sham is arrested he will open the Pandora box against other political leaders,’ he said.
