Speeding Merc mows down youth

A 24-year-old man riding his motorcycle was mowed down by a speeding white Mercedes in East Delhi’s Preet Vihar on Sunday night. Rash driving and general disregard for traffic rules led to the loss of the sole bread winner of the family.

The deceased has been identified as Manoj, alias Monu, who used to work as a plumber. Manoj used to stay in Mandawali with his wife and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. The incident occurred at 10 pm near the Madhuban colony branch of State Bank of India (SBI) in Preet Vihar when the driver of the luxury car, Rajkumar Chawla (50), hit the victim’s motorcycle, which resulted in Manoj’s immediate death.

In the light of the mishap, locals of the area rushed to the spot and one of them made a PCR call. The locals had a clash with the police. 

The incident led to chaos in the area and agitated locals allegedly set a police motorbike on fire. Bhairon Singh Gurjar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East, said: “The driver of the Mercedes has been arrested. A case has been registered at the Preet Vihar police station under the appropriate sections of the IPC.” Based on <g data-gr-id="23">technical</g> evidence, Rajkumar has been arrested. Police said that he runs a business. A case has been registered at the Preet Vihar police station under Section 304(a) (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
