SP may propel Sibal to Rajya Sabha now

They, however, can get a candidate elected if the SP transfers its surplus votes to the Congress.

According to sources, Samajwadi Party has agreed in principal to support the candidature of the cabinet minister in the ousted UPA government. As per vote arithmetic, the SP has enough numbers to send six members to the House of Elders and the spare 12 votes can be transferred to another candidate.

Some prominent SP leaders are of the opinion that to take cudgels against the Modi government in Parliament, it’s important to have an articulate voice on the Opposition benches.

The tenure of 10 members from the state is coming to end on 25 November. According to the number of members in the legislative assembly, the SP can easily manage to win six Rajya Sabha seats, while Mayawati-led BSP can win two seats and BJP can manage one seat. Despite 28 members in the House and eight members of Ajit Singh-led RLD, the Congress is not in position to secure even one seat.

So, the Sonia Gandhi-led party would need the support of SP to send a member. Former minister Ajit Singh is also pushing his candidature, but the SP is not in favour of supporting the RLD chief. The candidature of Congress leader is at the forefront. Interestingly, the Modi government is in minority in the Rajya Sabha, and this situation would continue for another two years.

The leader of house in the Rajya Sabha is Arun Jaitley, who is also a lawyer by profession. He is considered as good defender of the government in the House. So, Kapil Sibal is the suitable choice to stand upto him, feels the SP leadership. The candidates finalised by the SP for its six seats are party secretary general Ramgopal Yadav, Ravi Prakash Verma from Khiri, Tajeen Fatima from Rampur, Neeraj Shekhar, the son of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar, from Balia, Javed Ali Khan from Sambhal and Chandrapal Singh Yadav from Jhansi.
