Soumen Mitra takes over as Kolkata Police Commissioner

Soumen Mitra, the IPS of 1988 batch, took over the charge of the commissioner of the Kolkata Police on Wednesday.

After taking the charge he said that the election in the city is close and Kolkata Police force is ready to get through the polls peacefully in the stae.

“We are professionals and will be able to conduct free and fair election. We are civil servants on transferable job and the state government has asked me to carry out my duty as the commissioner of police,” Mitra said.

Mitra went to the headquarters of the city police at Lalbazar after meeting the senior administrative officers in Nabanna. It may be mentioned that Mitra became the commissioner after Rajeev Kumar was removed from the post by the election commission on Tuesday.

Kumar became the new ADG of the Anti-Corruption Bureau replacing Ram Phal Pawar, who has been sent to CID as the new ADG in the place of Mitra. The state home department stated in a notification that “the transfers were made with immediate effect and until further orders”.
