Soprano Delight

The belief of music being a universal language, was proven once again as an amalgamation of Austrian and Korean music concert, titled- ‘Liederabend’, took place at the FICCI Auditorium on Thursday evening in the national Capital. The musical event was organised by The Korean Cultural Centre, India, as they brought together, renowned South Korean soprano singer, Sooyeon Lee and globally celebrated Austrian pianist Helmut Deutsch.

‘Liederabend’, is nothing but a ‘song recital’ in English, but this song recital programme had the full attention of the audience comprising of several foreign delegates like Hatem Tageldin, Ambassador of Egypt, Linus von Castelmur, Ambassador of Switzerland and his wife Francoise Gardies, Sikapale Henry Chinzewe, Charge d’ Affaires, Zambia High Commission and Mozes Tandung Lelating, Minister Counsellor, Social and Cultural Affairs, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.

During the opening speech, Cho Hyun, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, who had previously been the Ambassador to Austria, said, “It feels as if my previous lives in Austria and Korea are being reincarnated here through the performance.”

Sooyeon Lee performed several songs by WA Mozart, Franz Schubert, Richard Strauss, Dunam Cho and Suin Lee. She also performed ‘New Arirang’ by Dongjin Kim a Korean folk song, which is also considered to be the unofficial national anthem of South Korea.

The soprano singer, decked in a snazzy white and silver gown, sang with all her passion and vocal power, as she got teary eyed in between the powerful emotional performances. The soft rhythmic Korean songs, with good amounts of highs and lows produced melodiously by Lee, had the audience awestruck and cheer for her powerful voice and Deutsch’s extraordinary piano instrumentals.
