Sonia refuses to share stage dais with CPI(M) leaders

Sonia Gandhi will address a rally in Sujapur in Malda on April 12. She will also address a meeting at Murarai in Birbhum on the same day. On April 18 Rahul Gandhi will address two meetings in Murshidabad. Congress leaders like Shakil Ahmed and Raj Babbar will take part in some road shows.

Sonia Gandhi’s instructions have left WBPCC leaders in a spot. Rahul Gandhi’s meeting in Kulti was attended by CPI(M) leaders like Bansagopal Chowdhury, former MP of the party.

Even before the election results, Congress and CPI(M) leaders have started blaming each other for the lukewarm response from voters in their election rallies. A veteran Congress leader said the party’s chairperson had taken such a rigid stance due to Sitaram Yechury’s statement where he had clearly stated that there will neither be any alliance nor seat adjustment.

He categorically stated that no party leader would share dais with Congress. They had invited democratic secular parties to join them. CPI(M)’s very tactful avoidance of calling Congress its partner has infuriated Sonia Gandhi who believes that CPI(M) is trying to give an impression that Congress had approached them for the alliance.

A veteran RSP leader said that this was only expected. If the partners of the alliance doubt each other, the alliance cannot work. “In 1977 the Left Front was very clear about the alliance of 11 political parties and so it worked,” he said. He questioned the success of the alliance. WBPCC leaders said they would not invite Left Front leaders to attend Rahul Gandhi’s meeting in Murshidabad. “People are determined to oust TMC and these minor things do not matter,” said WBPCC chief Adhir Chowdhury.
