Sikh woman in UK to sue gurdwara for explosion injuries

A British Sikh woman is taking legal action against a gurdwara in Scotland after she suffered severe injuries to her leg in an explosion in its kitchen area in 2011. Kuljit Bahia was helping in preparations of langar (food served at gurdwaras) at the Sri Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Dundee when a pressure cooker exploded in its kitchen in 2011, severely injuring her and another woman.

Kuljit lost the bottom part of her right leg in the blast and was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. After the investigation, local police had said that there were no suspicious circumstances behind the blast. Bahia has now lodged an action at Scotland’s Court of Session, claiming damages from the ‘Sikh Community of Dundee’ as well as three named individuals, Manjit Singh Athwal, Satwant Bhachu and Gurdev Singh ?- all members of the gurdwara’s operating committee, Herald Scotland reported.

Refuting the charges, Gurdev said, ‘I was not even there at the time of the explosion. I only turned up there once the police and ambulance had arrived. I go there for worship, I don’t even go in the kitchen. I’ve known her for a long time, probably since the 1980s, so this is a big shock to me. I don’t think anyone should be to blame for what happened, it was just an accident as far as I’m concerned. I didn’t even know she was suing me,’ he said.
