Shopian killings: Separatists strike enters Day 2

Normal life was disrupted for the second day on Sunday due to a strike call by separatist outfits to protest against the killing of four youth in Shopian district.

Shops and business establishments were shut and public transport remained off roads. However, private cars were seen plying in the city, official sources said.

Security forces were deployed in strength in the city to maintain law and order, they said.

Four persons, including two civilians, were killed in CRPF firing in Shopian on Saturday after the paramilitary forces came under attack by militants.

The locals allege the youth were killed in unprovoked firing by the security forces.

Both factions of Hurriyat Conference and JKLF called for a general strike on Sunday to protest against the killings.

JKLF chairman Yasin Malik was also detained near his Maisuma residence here as he tried to take out a protest march along with his associates.

Curfew has been imposed in areas under police station Maisuma, the sources said.

Separatists had also called for a shutdown on Saturday to protest against the concert of internationally-acclaimed orchestra conductor, Zubin Mehta.
