Repairing work of Santragachi Bridge will start from Jan 17

Movement of heavy vehicles on Santragachi Bridge will be restricted for 15 days each in January and March to undertake its repairing work.

There will be no repairing work in February considering the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Examinations.

The bridge, which connects the city with the National Highways, is at present in a dilapidated condition.

Thus the state government has taken the initiative to repair the bridge. It may be mentioned that actor Pijush Ganguly was killed in a road accident on the bridge in October 2015. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went to see him at the hospital where he had later succumbed to his injuries.

A high level meeting in this regard held at Nabanna on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by several senior officials including Indeevar Pandey, principal secretary of the state public works department and commissioner of the Howrah City Police DP Singh.

Pandey said the repairing work will be carried out in two phases. In first phase, the work will commence on January 17 and it will continue for the next 15 days till January 31. The work of the second phase will begin on March 1 and the repairing work will be complete by March 15.

He said initiative has been taken to complete the repairing work within a month. However, light vehicles will be allowed to ply on the bridge from 5 am to 11 pm.

The Kolkata bound vehicles will be diverted though Andul-Alampur Road while the vehicles from the city that need to take National Highway 2 and 6 will be diverted through Nivedita Bridge.

Plying of heavy vehicles will be allowed on GT Road and Foreshore Road from 10 pm to next day 6 am.

It may be mentioned that repairing of the bridge was a longstanding demand of local people, drivers of buses and other vehicles.
