Red tape delays rescue of girls

Out of 20 girls who were brought to Delhi from West Bengal, eight were rescued by the joint team of Crime Branch, Shakti Vahini, an NGO and Butterflies, another NGO, earlier this month. About 164 statements of each girl have been recorded, judgement of which is pending and is supposed to arrive on Tuesday.

As per the FIR lodged by Shakti Vahini and Butterflies, the owner of the placement agency was arrested by the police. After his arrest, two girls were rescued from two different houses where they were placed as domestic help. Later, with the help of Butterflies, although the police identified four more houses, it did not rescue them. Butterflies claimed that they were informed that only after recording the statements of the girls rescued, the other girls would be rescued. Further, Butterflies were told that they would contact them after the rescue plan. But till now no information was imparted to them. The organisations also accused that the Crime Branch, who is the specialist unit for handling trafficking cases, has been very slow throughout this matter.

According to Children's Welfare Committee, as directions have not been complied with properly, the rehabilitation process was getting delayed unnecessarily. Keeping children in the institution is not going to serve the purpose of rehabilitation as they want to be reunited with families, CWC observed.

Earlier in March, eight girls were rescued who alleged that they were sexually abused and physically harassed by the owners of the houses where they were placed as domestic help.
